'Simple' Pet Nat

Born from a desire to develop a more conscious way of winemaking, Proyecto Nakkal in Canelones produces wines with minimum intervention, respecting the fruit, nature and the environment. Recognised as Descorchados’ Winery Revelation of the Year in 2021, this passion project comes from Santiago Degásperi (also recognised as Descorchados’ Winemaker Revelation of the Year in 2022), Nicolás Monforte and Bruno Bresesti. These three good friends and winemakers focus on producing fresh, accessible wines that reflect both their natural ingredients and their natural environment. Spontaneous ferments utilising wild yeasts present in the vineyard produce complex wines with strong varietal and terroir expression. The wines are not clarified or filtered but racked twice by moon calendar (in last quarter) for a natural clarification. To quote the team at Nakkal, ‘The grapes are the protagonists; we are just a guide.' Macerated for 2 hours and then fermented, without any additions, for 22 days. The wine is racked and bottled at the very end of fermentation so it completes the process in the bottle.

Corte Naranja

Bodega Bresesti was founded in 1937 by immigrants from the Northern Italian region of Lombardy. Bruno Bresesti, still only in his thirties, is the fourth generation of the family to head up winemaking. This is very much a family affair with Bruno as the driving force but still aided by and benefitting from the experience of his hardworking parents. The winery, with its 15 underground concrete fermentation vats, is located on the outskirts of Montevideo. Benefitting from vineyards in the coveted micro-region of Las Violetas, the focus here is on the production of high quality, distinctive wines delivering a unique expression of that terroir. Traditionally vinified wines are produced alongside more experimental and radical styles - aiming to balance constant innovation and the preservation of traditional, artisanal processes. Bruno is also part of the team at our other new Uruguyan winery project, ‘Proyecto Nakkal’. Grapes are sourced from a 20-year-old vineyard, using plot Nº13 and Nº3. It produces 12,000 kg per hectare using a Lira training system, with vines running in an eastwest row orientation. Manual harvesting. Aged in concrete tanks for 6-8 months with skins on. The skins are periodically mixed with the wine to achieve the evolution of a more complex wine, with greater creaminess and freshness.

La Freneza Pinot Noir

After years of winemaking experience across the globe, in 2020 Agustín Lombroni decided that it was finally time to head home to Patagonia with his family to start his own project. His ‘crazy’ adventure is built on his passion for one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, varietals - Pinot Noir. Dominio de Freneza’s ambition is to bring the vineyard to the glass – producing true expressions of terroir through traditional winemaking methods. The winery uses hand-picking, partial de-stemming, whole bunch fermentation and only the gentlest pisonage and remontage. As Agustín says, ‘Our philosophy is that sometimes, less is enough.

Itatino Cinsault

Viña Dagaz (Dagaz is a Celtic rune that means ‘the beginning of a new path’) was founded in 2015 by renowned winemaker Marco Puyo and Patricio Gomez-Barris. After many years exploring the different areas of Colchagua whilst working on behalf of other wineries Marco felt that the temperate Mediterranean climate and granitic soils of Pumanque offered a unique opportunity to create something more personal. Drawing inspiration from the granitic soils of Côtes du Rhône, Galicia and Rioja, he wanted to create something that authentically represented the terroir. The first vintage in 2016 produced Tierras de Pumanque; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Carménère and Syrah. Today Dagaz continue to produce high quality wines showing elegant mineral characteristics and good acidity with great structure. The Guarilihue Vineyard is located in the Coelemu area within the ltata Valley, 20 kilometres away from the Pacific Ocean in a straight line, at an altitude of 300 m (984 ft) above sea level. The vineyard is 40 years old and grown in bush vines. The soil is made up of granite, with different degrees of decomposition; it is quite deep and permeable, with an abundance of quartz stones throughout the profile, which allows good root growth. 10 day cold soak at 8°C. Fermentation in concrete oval casks. Post-fermentative maceration of 1 week. Aging for 8 months in concrete oval casks. The aim of using concrete casks was to maintain the freshness, nerve and energy of the wine, as well as the expression of the variety and the ‘terroir’

Estate Pais

La Despensa Wines from Chile’s Colchagua Valley is owned, organically-farmed and operated by Matt Ridgway, originally from Dorset, and his Chilean wife Ana. La Despensa is focused on varieties that are not what you’d typically expect from Chile, such as the traditional Rhône grapes of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. They also offer a rare example from Chile of Italy’s signature grape Sangiovese and even rarer and very old-vine Pais from Colchagua, where there are just 50 or so hectares left of these ancient vines in the entire valley. La Despensa produces high-quality, fresh, unoaked and deliciously drinkable wines that invite a second glass. Dry-farmed on less than 12 inches of winter rain per year, this is a different take on Pais compared with wines from this variety further south in Chile. Hand-picked grapes. Open-top bin fermentation with native yeasts. 14 days from picking to pressing, no extended maceration. Aged 100% in Flextank.

Bodega Los Haroldos, owned by the Falasco family, is one of Argentina’s leading family-owned wineries. Today the fourth generation continues the story that began in 1939 when Haroldo Santos Falasco, known as ‘Don Lolo’, began to wheel his bicycle through the streets of his small hometown of Chacabuco, 200km west of Buenos Aires, selling his wines from the basket on the front. Eighty years later, Franco Falasco and his siblings are responsible for their family’s legacy: creating wines of excellence and quality for the world to enjoy. Bunch selection in the vineyard. Fermentation and maceration for 8 days. Maceration post-fermentation for 7 days. 100% malolactic fermentation. 70% of the wine is aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, 30% in first fill French oak.

Reserve Organic Malbec

A pioneer in the Uco Valley, Bodega Piedra Negra was established in 1996. François Lurton was the first person to plant vines in the foothills of the Andes Cordillera (at an altitude of 1,100 m.a.sl.) in semi-desert conditions in the middle of what would become the Geographical Indication of Los Chacayes. The poor, gravelly, alluvial soil reminded him of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux! Drawing on expertise acquired all over the world, he immediately introduced environmentally friendly growing methods. His 99 hectares of vines are managed organically and in adherence to biodynamic principles. In addition to Argentine selections of Malbec, the estate also grows French selections of the grape (known as Cot). In white grapes they offer a rare source of wines produced from Pinot Gris
