SETÚBAL PENINSULA WINES - a mandatory stop in your journey through Portuguese wines

As Portuguese wines have more and more international recognition, and more particularly in the UK, the Setúbal Peninsula Wines are getting a fair share of this success, and you’ll easily understand why when navigating through the 10 tables showcasing the wines from the region at SITT Autumn, with some producers seeking distribution in the market. In 2020 vs 2019, the UK represented the strongest growth in exports of the Setúbal Peninsula wines: + 33.5% in volume (making the UK the 2nd destination in exports, right after Brazil) and +61.6% in value (3rd destination after Brazil and Canada). Whether you already are an expert in Portuguese wines or starting your journey, the Setúbal Peninsula is a mandatory stop and the perfect introduction to the country’s wines. As a proof, the fact that 1/5 of the total sales of certified still wines in Portugal are from the region: they definitely are one of the Portuguese drinkers' favourites and are now expanding more and more through exports.

The region, that stretches from the south of Lisbon and the Tejo river, down to the middle of the Alentejo west coast, offers a beautiful diversity. This is due to the region gathering two different realities: the Tróia Peninsula to the South of the Sado estuary and the Setúbal Península to the North of the river, home of most of the production of the region. The climate combines, in a singular way, wines that are clearly Atlantic with wines that are markedly Mediterranean. This diversity allows the producers to make two highlights, when mentioning Portuguese wines: the Moscatel de Setúbal, one of the famous three Portuguese fortified wines, and balanced and attractive reds, made mainly from a base of Castelão grape (66% as a minimum for the DO Palmela reds).
